About This Spot

Stepping into Gary’s Restaurant in Freeburg feels a bit like coming home after a day spent wandering unfamiliar streets. There’s an inviting quietness to the place, the kind that settles around you as you slide into a well-worn booth. It’s a classic American diner with a gentle hum of quiet conversation and the clinking of plates, where the pace is easy and unhurried—perfect for mornings that stretch into afternoons, or for gathering with neighbors at any hour.

The warm, genuine atmosphere is woven through by the familiar rhythms of small town life. Servers move with a friendly attentiveness, greeting regulars by name and making newcomers feel instantly part of the story. It’s a space where everyone’s welcome, from early risers seeking a comforting breakfast to families gathering for a simple, honest meal. The sense of community and care creates a backdrop that’s both relaxed and quietly lively.

Here, the kitchen honors tradition with a menu that speaks to heartening, homemade fare—biscuits and gravy that remind you of Sunday mornings, skillets filled with golden waffles, and hearty portions that satisfy without fuss. The food is approachable but thoughtfully prepared: dinners featuring flaky fried bluegill or tender country fried steak feel like they could be from a family recipe, complete with sides like creamy coleslaw and warm mac and cheese designed to make you slow down and savor each bite.

We had the best experience! The young man waiting on us was polite, respectful of all the diners, there were a lot of elderly, welcoming them by name. The food was home good cooking, generous portions. A group of men were meeting there and they generously had taken care of our bill! We thanked them and chatted a bit. We were here from Wisconsin for an event at the Air Force base, will try and go there again while we are here!

We had a great experience after visiting Eckert's. Great small town atmosphere. Everyone in the dining room (except us) knew one another. I thought that was cool.

Great place to grab breakfast lunch or dinner. They have breakfast buffet on Saturday and Sunday. And a lunch/dinner buffet on Wednesday and Sunday. ***Edit to reflect that since new ownership has taken over Gary's no longer has buffet. And the hours have temporarily changed to accommodate renovations.***

Great small town restaurant! The service is phenomenal and staff is friendly. The buffet offers some of the usual buffet staples, but also offers some creative twists for variety. 10/10 will go again

Good food, generous portions, at reasonable prices. Everything you could want from a diner. I definitely recommend it!

New owners are stepping up the game at Gary's Restaurant in Freeburg. I was in the mood for breakfast and this huge veggie & cheese omelet was great. I also had a slice of pumpkin pie, which was very good. Not quite finished with the renovations, but looking good. Can't wait to see the completed version.
